Alma Martinez - Assistant Professor of Theatre

Education: Education: Ph.D., Stanford University; M.F.A, University of Southern California; B.A., Whittier College

Acting Achievements: A professional actor for over 35 years, her Hollywood professional debut was in the stage play, and film, Zoot Suit written and directed by Luis Valdez. She has been the lead actress in some of Valdez’s most important projects that include, Corridos: Tales of Passion and Revolution (George Peabody Award), I Don’t Have to Show You Any Stinkin’ Badges, Carpa de los Rasquachis and Mummified Deer (BackStage/Beverly Garland “Best Actor” Nomination), among others. She has over 100 theatre credits including Broadway, Off Broadway, regional theatre and European and Latin American stages. She has appeared in over 100 commercials and her film credits include Under Fire, Zoot Suit, Barbarosa, Born in East LA, Cristiada and Strike One. Scholarly Expertise: Acting and Acting Theory; Directing; Producing; Dramatic Criticism; Theatre History; World Theatre; Chicano/a Theater; Luis Valdez and El Teatro Campesino; Mexican and Latin American Popular Political Theater (1965-1975); African-American, Native American, and Asian-American Theater; Critical Race Theory in Drama. Research Interests: 
 Her scholarly research looks at the interconnectivity of Chicano Theatre and the Nuevo Teatro Popular Movement in Latin America between 1964-1975. Through shared histories of colonization, mestizaje, indigenismo, Spanish socio-political domination and Third world economic conditions, she examines interstices of connectivity that bridge the US Latino diaspora with Latin American teatro/theater movements.

Zoot Suit Discovery Guide: This bilingual educational study guide was developed with students from the 5 colleges to support the 2008 and 2009 Pomona College Zoot Suit productions and the 2010 production of Zoot Suit that was performed and produced by the National Theatre Company of Mexico in Mexico City.
