What are your plans this summer?

CURTAIN RAISERS of The Claremont Colleges
Summer Theatre/Dance Scholarships

The Curtain Raisers of The Claremont Colleges is a non-profit organization that supports theatre and dance at the colleges and in the community. Curtain Raisers, in partnership with the Dept. of Theatre & Dance, created the Claremont School of Theatre Arts, a summer theatre program for youth. The group also provides theatre programs at El Roble Intermediate School each year.

The Curtain Raisers Summer Theatre and Dance Scholarship Fund was established to assist students active in the Five College Theatre and Dance Dept. who wish to take part in summer theatre/dance activities, but who need financial assistance to participate. The modest funding for the scholarships is raised each year by member contributions. This year a total of $4,000 is available for the combined scholarship grants to all applicants.

Awards will be made based on the application, interview, financial need and acceptance into a recognized summer theatre or dance program. The Scholarship Committee will consist of members of the Curtain Raisers Board and of the Theatre/Dance Faculty. Interviews will take place on Friday, May 3, 2013.

Students receiving scholarships will be asked to give an oral presentation of their summer experience to the Curtain Raisers in the fall after their return to the Colleges.

Guidelines
1. The applicant must be a student who will be returning to one of The Claremont Colleges next year, to bring his/her experience back to the college community.
2. Preference will be given to sophomores and juniors, and to students who have not previously received a scholarship from Curtain Raisers of the Claremont Colleges.
3. Other considerations shall include financial need as reflected in the student’s college aid award and the student’s positive contributions to the Department of Theatre and Dance program.
4. The applicant must have received a bona fide offer to a summer theatre or dance program which will contribute to the professional development of the student. The opportunity must be with a reputable theatre/dance organization.

Students should receive a job offer before applying for the scholarship.

Start looking NOW for summer positions.

Applications are available in the theatre office and must be returned to the theatre office by Friday, April 26, 2013 at 5:00 p.m. For an electronic version of the application, contact Teddie Warner at tkwarner@verizon.net or click/tap here to download an application

Our Own Efe Kabba has been named a 2013-2014 Watson Fellow!!

Efe Kabba, Pomona College

Subject of her grant: Musical Swings and Other Digital Landscapes and Experiences

Canada, Denmark, Japan, Germany, Singapore
In the past, our relationship with interactive digital technology has been confined to certain objects like computers and mobile phones. This limitation made the distinction between the actual/physical and virtual/digital very clear. But what happens when the screen is no longer necessary and the distinction begins to blur? We are progressing towards a time when interactive technologies will be actively integrated into our physical surroundings. It’s already happening. I want to find out how these digital technologies are transforming the physical spaces we live in, and how that transformation is changing how we perceive ourselves, our relationship to the world and other human beings.
